Director Joseph Kosinski approached Daft Punk after their Alive 2006/2007 tour concluded. The duo worked exclusively on the score for nineteen months, consulting with composers like Hans Zimmer and Alexandre Desplat. They wrote at Henson Recording Studios while an 85-piece orchestra recorded at AIR Lyndhurst Studios in London under conductor Gavin Greenaway. Joseph Trapanese served as arranger and orchestrator, noting he was locked in a room with "robots" for two years to translate between electronic and orchestral worlds. Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo stated they avoided using only synthesizers, valuing the longevity of instruments like Stradivarius violins. Bangalter composed heroic themes while Homem-Christo wrote darker cues. The film was cut to the music rather than the music being added at the end.

While the soundtrack includes tracks like "The Son of Flynn" and "Derezzed," songs by Journey and Eurythmics appear in the film but not on the album. A track titled "Computerized" featuring Jay-Z surfaced online in 2014; it was originally intended as a single but discarded because its lyrics about technology felt too grounded for the film's setting. Portions of this unused song's instrumentation appear in the final score.
