Before forming Daft Punk, Bangalter and Homem-Christo were members of the indie rock band Darlin', which disbanded after around six months. The name 'Daft Punk' was taken from a negative review of Darlin' by Dave Jennings in Melody Maker, who dubbed their music 'a daft punky thrash.' In 1999, they began appearing publicly with robot personas to disguise their identities. Their third album, Human After All (2005), received mixed reviews for its repetitiveness and darker mood. They directed an avant-garde science-fiction film, Electroma, released in 2006, which does not include their music.

In March 2005, Daft Punk released Human After All after six weeks of writing and recording. Following this, they toured throughout 2006 and 2007, performing a 'megamix' from a large LED-fronted pyramid. The live album Alive 2007 won a Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album in 2009. In 2013, they left Virgin Records for Columbia Records to release Random Access Memories, their fourth and final album. The lead single 'Get Lucky' reached the top 10 in the charts of 27 countries. Daft Punk announced their split in 2021.
